Ofcom has reduced the amount of regional news ITV is required to air in most parts of England by a third.
Under the terms of the broadcaster’s new 10-year licence starting in January, the cut is to be offset by a requirement to produce more ‘localised’ regional news.
The number of ITV regions in England has increased from eight to 14, but London and the north-west are not affected by the new terms, despite a request by the broadcaster that they also be included.
Ofcom said the changes were “intended to help secure sustainable levels of regional programming”.
